This is the register a birth abroad article. If you have a child that has been born abroad then you can register the child or children at the local US Embassy. Each Embassy has it own procedure however this is what would be needed when you do approach the Embassy.
Register a Birth Abroad
The Consular Section issues a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) to U.S. citizens born overseas. This is the equivalent of a US birth certificate. Reports of birth are done by appointment only and require the child’s presence.
Documentation of Child Born in Wedlock
- There has to be two official extracts of the local birth certificate. This from the local government; (the local hospital birth registration form will not be accepted)*
- Your current American passport as well as a photocopy of the passport; (This or US Certificate of Naturalization)*
- The original marriage certificate. Also the proof of your previous divorce; (This must be the original divorce or death certificates). This with copies for the files.
- Should only one of the parents be a US citizen. Then proof of physical presence in the US is required. This can be a school certificate or employment records. Medical records in the US or old photos will also do.
- Now should both parents be US citizens then proof that at least one parent established a residence in the US is required. Again this can be an original school certificate, employment records. This has to show that it was before you gave birth.
- The parents Social Security numbers also need to be submitted;
- Completed form DS-2029 (Application for Consular Report of Birth Abroad)
- Completed form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card for children)
- All foreign language documents presented must be accompanied by a simple English translation that does NOT have to be certified.
Documentation of Children out of Wedlock (Unmarried US Citizen Mother)
- Same as above*
- You will need proof of at least one year of continuous physical presence in the US. This can be a school certificate as well as employment records of your prescience.
- Your Social Security number
- The completed form DS-2029 (Application for Consular Report of Birth Abroad)
- The completed form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card for children)
- The English translation that does NOT have to be certified.
Children out of Wedlock (Unmarried US Citizen Father)
- The child must have been registered in accordance with the local laws;
- The father must have been physically present in the United States for five years (two of which after the age of 14) prior to the birth of the child (for children born before Nov. 14, 1986, the required period of physical presence in the United States is longer)
- Also the father must sign an affidavit of paternity and a statement of his firm intention to financially support the child until he/she reaches age 18.
- Also two official extracts of the local birth certificate from the local authorities; (Please note: the hospital birth registration form is not acceptable.
- Your current US passport and a photocopy of the passport. If you are a naturalized citizen please also bring your U.S. Certificate of Naturalization.
- Proof of one year continuous physical presence in the U.S. The easiest way to prove this is with original school or employment records but you may also use old passports with entry and exit stamps, photographs, records of doctor visits or any other official record that shows that you were in the United States.
- Social Security number
- The completed form DS-2029 (Application for Consular Report of Birth Abroad)
- The completed form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card for children)
- All foreign language documents presented must be accompanied by a simple English translation that does NOT have to be certified.
- The two official extracts of the local birth certificate from the local authorities; (Please note: the hospital birth registration form is not acceptable.
- Your current US. passport and a photocopy of the passport. If you are a naturalized citizen please also bring your U.S. Certificate of Naturalization.
- Also proof of one year continuous physical presence in the US.
